Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how Veil Browser (“Veil,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use the Veil mobile application on iOS (the “App”) and related pages such as our website (together with the App, the “Service”).
Important: Veil is designed so that browsing transparency data and game-session details ordinarily remain on your device. We do not presently operate a Veil user-account cloud that receives your browsing history, Veil Reports, or game logs for our profiling or advertising. We do not sell your personal information. Please read this Policy carefully. By downloading, installing, or using the App, you acknowledge this Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the App.
This Policy should be read with our Terms of Use. It is provided for transparency. It is not legal advice, and it does not create any warranty beyond what applicable law requires. Product details may evolve; when practices change in a material way, we will update this Policy.
1. Who we are and how to contact us
Veil is an independent iOS browser application focused on local transparency of tracker and advertising-related signals, with optional entertainment features.
Privacy contact:
vilbrh+veil@gmail.com
Website: https://veil-browser.vercel.app
2. What Veil is (and is not)
Veil is a web browser that can observe certain network and page-related activity occurring on your device while you browse, and present that activity in summaries you can read. It may also offer optional game-like modes and user-initiated exports.
Veil:
- Does not presently require creating an account with us
- Is designed so that your Veil Report, browsing history, tracker logs, screen-scan text, and game logs are not uploaded to Veil-operated servers for our own profiling, advertising, or resale (we do not presently operate such a backend for that purpose)
- Does not block trackers or ads by default
- Does not guarantee that every tracker, ad, or company action will be detected, named correctly, or interpreted correctly
Veil is an observational, interpretive, and (where enabled) entertainment tool. Many labels, categories, confidence scores, narratives, and game signals in the App are Veil’s automated inferences or game mechanics from incomplete technical or page signals — not verified statements of fact about any company, website, advertiser, or person.
If we later offer optional cloud sync, accounts, analytics, or similar services, we will describe those practices in an updated Policy before (or when) they apply.
3. Information processed on your device
When you use Veil, the App may create and store information locally in the App’s storage on your iPhone or iPad (for example via Apple frameworks such as SwiftData, local files, preferences, or Documents storage you can access through Files when enabled):
- Browsing history — URLs and titles of pages you visit in Veil
- Bookmarks — sites you save, including optional favicon data
- Session metadata — session identifiers, timestamps, page-visit counts
- Tracker / network signals — domains, request-related metadata, cookies/storage-related events, script activity Veil observes in the browsing session
- Page / DOM context — limited page text, labels, and structure Veil extracts from pages you load (for transparency or game features)
- Screen-scan / OCR data — when you initiate a scan, or when a game mode you started uses on-device text recognition: a snapshot of the visible web view may be processed on device to extract text; extracted text and related records may be stored locally for that purpose
- Derived insights — Veil Reports, category guesses, “purchase intent” style summaries, company/vendor labels, confidence levels, role labels, charts, and similar interpretations
- Game / Rabbit Hole data — challenge topics, difficulty labels, hops, timers, scores, stealth or tracker-related tallies, page-visit trails, ad-click flags, session logs, personal-best / career stats, and optional notes you type (for example playtest feedback)
- Exports you create — files such as playtest logs or shared reports that you generate, save, or share (including via the system share sheet or Files)
- App preferences — theme, detail level, retention settings, appearance choices, and similar options
You control much of this data through Settings (retention and “Clear all Veil data”) and by deleting game or export files you created. Bookmarks may be retained when other Veil data is cleared, as described in the App. Game modes may use ephemeral browsing storage that is discarded when a session ends, as described in the App — while scores, career stats, or playtest archives you kept may remain until you clear them.
Exact categories stored can vary by App version and which features you use.
What we do not presently collect to Veil servers
We do not presently run a Veil service that receives your history, tracker logs, OCR text, Veil Reports, or game logs for our own profiling, advertising, or resale.
Indirect / platform processing
The App still uses Apple platforms and ordinary internet connectivity. Websites you visit, DNS, CDNs, Apple (App Store, device OS, push/update infrastructure, iCloud backups if you enable them), email providers (if you contact us), and other third parties may process data under their policies when you browse, back up your device, download the App, or message us. That activity is outside Veil’s control. If you enable device backups, local Veil data may be included in those backups according to your Apple settings.
4. Screen scanning and on-device text recognition
Screen scanning / OCR is generally user-initiated (for example, tapping a scan control). In game modes you choose to start, the App may also use on-device text recognition automatically as part of gameplay (for example, to estimate whether a target appears on screen).
When recognition runs:
- Veil may capture an image of the visible portion of the current web page in the App
- On-device text recognition may extract readable text from that image
- Extracted text and related metadata may be stored locally and used for transparency insights and/or game matching
You are responsible for deciding when to use features that capture or analyze on-screen content. Do not use them on content you are not allowed to capture or process under applicable law or third-party terms. Veil does not independently verify that a scan is lawful or permitted for your use case.
5. How Veil uses on-device information
On your device, Veil uses the information above to:
- Display pages and provide browser features (tabs, bookmarks, history, settings)
- Show transparency features such as the Veil Report
- Infer possible tracker roles, vendor names, interest themes, and similar summaries
- Operate optional Game Features (scoring, proximity, finish detection, stats, notes)
- Apply your retention preferences and respond to clear/delete actions
- Support optional export/copy/share flows you initiate
We do not use your on-device Veil Report or game data to sell ads or build a Veil cloud profile of you under the product design described in this Policy.
6. Inferences, confidence scores, and “plain English” summaries
Please read this carefully.
Veil’s reports and related UI may name companies (for example based on known domains), describe possible tracker roles, guess interest or purchase-related themes, show signal or proximity meters, and use everyday language so technical signals are easier to read.
Those outputs:
- May be incomplete, outdated, wrong, or oversimplified
- May attribute activity to a brand or company based on domain matching or heuristics that can be incorrect
- May describe possible advertising or analytics purposes without proving intent, contracts, or outcomes
- Are not legal, consumer-protection, medical, financial, or investigative findings
- Are not accusations of wrongdoing
Where the App shows confidence labels (for example “Not sure,” “Likely”), treat them seriously: low confidence means you should not treat the narrative as settled fact.
You agree to use Veil Reports and similar outputs as a personal educational or entertainment aid only. You are solely responsible for how you interpret, rely on, quote, screenshot, export, or share any Veil output. Do not present Veil inferences as definitive statements about any third party.
7. Game modes, scores, and playtest exports
If you use Rabbit Hole or similar Game Features, the App may store gameplay records locally, including scores and optional notes you enter. If you use export or Files sharing features, playtest or session files may be written to App Documents storage that you can access on your device.
Those files can contain detailed run information (for example pages visited, score breakdowns, and notes you typed). You control whether to create, keep, share, or delete them. If you share them with anyone (including the developer), treat them as containing browsing-related information you chose to disclose.
Game scores and stats are gameplay artifacts, not public profiles, unless you later opt into a sharing feature we expressly offer.
8. Exporting, copying, and sharing
If you export, copy, screenshot, or share a Veil Report, playtest log, or any part of App content, you choose the destination and recipients. Once data leaves the App through your actions, Veil cannot control what happens next.
You are responsible for:
- Redacting information you do not want shared
- Complying with laws and third-party rights when sharing
- Not misrepresenting Veil inferences as proven facts about companies or people
9. Data retention and deletion
You can choose retention options in Settings → Data retention (for example session-only, fixed windows, or longer retention as offered in the App).
You can delete Veil transparency data using Settings → Clear all Veil data (bookmarks may be kept, as described in the App). Game career stats, high scores, or Documents exports may need to be cleared through the relevant in-App controls or by deleting files / the App, depending on version.
Deleting the App using iOS may remove local App data, subject to Apple’s behavior and any backups you maintain.
We do not maintain a separate Veil cloud copy of your reports to delete on request, because we do not presently host that data.
10. Third-party websites, networks, and terms
When you browse with Veil, you interact with third-party websites, apps embedded in pages, advertisers, analytics providers, and networks. Those parties may collect information under their own privacy policies and terms — including whether or not Veil shows you related signals.
Veil does not control third-party collection, accuracy of third-party disclosures, ad auctions, or profiling that occurs on remote servers.
Your responsibilities: You must comply with the terms of service, acceptable use rules, and laws that apply to sites and services you visit (including social networks and shopping sites used during gameplay). Features that read page structure or on-screen text are provided for your personal, on-device transparency and/or entertainment. Misuse (including prohibited automation, scraping, or circumventing site protections) is your responsibility. We may update, limit, or remove features to reduce abuse or platform risk.
Trademarks and brand names that appear in the App (including vendor labels and challenge topics) belong to their owners. Mentions are for identification, description of observed technical signals, or gameplay context only and do not imply endorsement, partnership, or affiliation.
11. Communications with us
If you email us, we may receive and retain the contents of your message, your email address, and related metadata as ordinary business correspondence (for example to respond to support or feedback). Do not include sensitive information you do not want stored in email.
12. Children
The App is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 via a Veil cloud service. If you believe a child has provided information to us by email, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it from our inbox. Parents and guardians are responsible for supervising device use.
13. Security
We design Veil so sensitive transparency and game data ordinarily remains local to your device. No method of electronic storage is perfectly secure. You are responsible for device passcodes, OS updates, physical control of your device, backup settings, and who you share exports with.
14. International users
Veil is offered as an iOS application that stores data locally on your device. If you use the App outside your home country, you are responsible for determining whether use is appropriate under local law. Because we do not presently operate a Veil cloud profile of your browsing, cross-border “transfer to Veil servers” of report data is not part of the current product design.
15. “As is” disclaimer; limitation of claims
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE APP AND ALL REPORTS, LABELS, INFERENCES, GAME OUTPUTS, AND DOCUMENTATION ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.
WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT:
- Detections or vendor attributions are complete or correct
- Inferences about advertising, tracking, or “what they want you to buy” are accurate
- Game scores, difficulty, or finish detection are fair or error-free
- The App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available on every device
- Use of the App will comply with third-party terms that apply to you
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE APP OR RELIANCE ON ANY VEIL OUTPUT. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR CLAIMS RELATING TO THE APP OR THIS POLICY WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF (A) THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US FOR THE APP IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM (IF ANY) OR (B) USD $50.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those cases, limits apply to the fullest extent allowed.
You agree that you use Veil at your own risk and that you remain responsible for decisions you make based on what the App shows.
For additional legal terms (license, acceptable use, indemnification, Apple-specific terms, and disputes), see the Terms of Use.
16. Changes to this Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will revise the “Last updated” date when we do. Continued use of the App after an update means you accept the revised Policy. If you do not agree, stop using the App and delete it.
17. Apple App Store
If you downloaded the App from the Apple App Store, Apple’s terms may also apply to the download relationship. Apple is not responsible for this Privacy Policy or for Veil’s handling of on-device information as described here. Privacy disclosures you see in App Store Connect “nutrition labels” are intended to summarize categories; this Policy controls the detailed description of our practices to the extent of any conflict in wording, except where Apple’s rules require specific disclosures.
